Mount Shasta

Mount Shasta Climbing Programs Are Here!

It’s been a long journey but Golden State Guiding is beyond excited to announce that we’ve been permitted to guide on Mount Shasta in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest! Mount Shasta is the 5th tallest peak in California and one of twelve coveted 14er’s with a prominence over 300 feet. Aspiring mountaineers, skiers and splitboarders from all over the world look to climb and descend Shasta’s flanks during the spring and summer months. We’ve got multiple programs to choose from ranging in length from 2-3 days on a variety of routes on Mount Shasta. Click the button below to learn more about our new Mount Shasta program options and come out with GSG and let’s create some memorable mountaineering experiences this season!

GSG's 3 Year Anniversary!

It's hard to believe but Golden State Guiding's 3 Year Anniversary is May 1st! How quickly the time has passed! Starting up a small guide service in 2017, we never could have imagined how far down the road we would be in just 3 years. Within this short amount of time we've expanded our operations outside of Southern California to include the Eastern Sierra, Joshua Tree, and Red Rock. We've become a 1% for the Planet member supporting local organizations like Yosemite Conservancy, Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center, Protect Our Winters, and Friends of Joshua Tree. We launched our winter programming in the Eastern Sierra and became an AIARE Avalanche Course provider, and we've had the opportunity to work with some amazing clients, whom we call friends, and organizations along the way. From the bottom of our hearts, we'd like to thank this incredible community for all of your support and for opening your doors to our service the past 3 years. We truly look forward to continuing to provide our community with the highest level of service in the years to come.

Without a doubt the biggest thing we'd like to acknowledge and say we are most grateful for is our GSG Guide and Ambassador family we've had the opportunity to get to know and work with over the last 3 years. We refer to our Guides and Ambassadors as family for reason. They're more than just people who represent our service, they are the backbone of our business, the face of our brand, the future of our service and industry, and most important, they're family. Thank you to each and every one of our talented Guides and Ambassadors for your dedication and loyalty to Golden State Guiding, for facilitating amazing outings for our clients, for bringing uncontrollable laughs and stories to share around the campfire, and for continuing to keep the dream and vision alive along the way. We couldn't do it without your continued efforts and support!

Shasta Rescue

This was the 6th rescue in one week on Mount Shasta and we were right in the thick of it. A very experienced mountaineer took a 300’ foot fall down Avalanche Gulch as we were descending the route after our successful summit. After doing a head to toe examination, taking vitals, cleaning up a few surface level wounds, and checking the victims LOR (level of responsiveness) he was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery. If you’re following us on Instagram or any other social media outlets we have there’s a good chance you enjoy recreating in the mountains or in the backcountry in general. We can’t stress enough that being trained in Wilderness Medicine is an invaluable tool to have in your toolbox and certainly helped in this scenario. Both GSG Guide @rhartegan and GSG Ambassador @jameson.schultz had formal training and certification as a Wilderness First Responder and Wilderness First Aid, their training certainly helped facilitate a successful rescue on the mountain. Whether you sign up for our extended WFR or WFA programs this coming November with our partner @themedalliance or another organization we strongly suggest doing so. You never know when the training you have will come into play and be needed in the field. Big thanks to the real hero’s, the Shasta Sheriff’s department for executing yet another successful rescue and even more so to Sheriff Mike Berry who you see in the photos. Shasta Summit!

A little over a week ago we were feasting on chili cheeseburgers, onion rings, fries and cold beers after a successful ascent of Mount Shasta. Such a beautiful mountain with spectacular 360 degree views for as far as the eye can see. Shasta (14,180’), being the second furthest southern volcano in the Cascades is in a league of its own and well worth the 8k in elevation gain to reach the summit. Stay tuned for more news regarding guided trips up this spectacular peak in 2020! For now you’ll have to settle for these inspiring photos GSG Ambassador Jameson Schultz (@jameson.schultz) took duding our recent ascent and scouting mission up Shasta, enjoy!
