Stan Smith
GSG Ambassador
Stan currently resides in Carpinteria, CA below the sandstone lined cliffs of the lower central coast. Stan started climbing at a ripe age of just 10 years old in Texas but really began taking an interest in climbing during his high school years when he lived in Annapolis, MD. Residing in Maryland, Stan had access to some world class crags during his formative years including Seneca Rocks, The New, Carderock and Great Falls to name a few. In the years to follow, Stan headed out to the Pacific North West participating in a semester at NOLS in 2005 and later acting as an Outdoor Educator for NOLS in 2006 where he helped guide a group up Denali via the Muldrow route. Recent years have found Stan in California enjoying the granite quartz monzonite routes of Joshua Tree, lichen streaked granite of the High Sierra and everything in between. Stan's laid back and traditional style approach to climbing and life in general is the reason why we not only recognize Stan as an Ambassador of Golden State Guiding but also consider him a close friend.
When Stan's not climbing he enjoys spending his free time hanging with his wife Jenn and dog Cruz. You can also find him spending countless hours tying his favorite flies for his next trip to the East Side, surfing the local breaks of Carpinteria, or snapping pics of anything that catches his interest.
